Bob Winquist Print E-mail

Bob Winquist hails from Canada and has worked in London as a freelance viola player since the 1970's. He has worked with, amongst others, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, the English National Ballet, the London Mozart Players and many other ensembles in London. Bob has extensive experience in the field of Baroque music, notably with the Hanover Band, the London Classical Players and the London Handel Orchestra and other, smaller, Baroque ensembles. He continues to be active in playing chamber music.

In the late 1970's Bob re-connected with his Country/Bluegrass roots, gradually becoming part of the British Bluegrass scene, attending festivals and, from the 1980's onward, playing in bands like the Bluegrass Ramblers, Hickory Swing and Grassfire. He is presently a member of A Band Like Alice, which is considered to be one of the foremost UK Bluegrass bands. Bob has toured the UK with Jim Eanes (a one-time Bluegrass Boy), twice with Rose Maddox (of Rockabilly fame) and last year with Kathy Chiavola, a fine singer from Nashville who is much loved in this country.

In 2002 Bob was co-director of music in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of THE WINTER'S TALE, which involved co-ordinating Bluegrass music with the theatrical side. This production played first at the Roundhouse in London and later in the year at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon.

Bob is one of the founders of the London Fiddle Convention
